| Meta DNS Pro meets the performance and security demands of any business that requires a DNS-only solution. The Zone Template Tool allows you to specify the options and resource records used most frequently in your environment. This page discusses the components of Meta DNS Pro and highlights why they make sense in your business. This page contains the following sections: Meta DNS Pro Feature Highlights The Meta DNS Pro Architecture The Meta DNS Pro Management Console The Meta DNS Pro Manager Server The DNS Servers Meta DNS Pro Tools BIND-based DNS services Initialization Wizard Zone Template Tool Windows Active Directory integration Service and Zone Configuration Check Effective Data Validation You can deploy Meta DNS Pro in three-tiers, which consist of: - Tier 1: the Management Console (the UI)
- Tier 2: the Manager Server (the datastore)
- Tier 3: the DNS services
The Management Console requires a Windows platform, but the Manager Server and the DNS services can run on Windows, Linux, Solaris, or the MetaInfo Appliance platforms (see System Requirements for more details). You configure and administer all Meta DNS Pro Services through the Meta DNS Pro Management Console. You can install an unlimited number of Management Consoles to ensure network-wide connectivity to the Manager Servers. The Meta DNS Pro Manager Server is the center of the Meta DNS Pro product. All communications between the three tiers happen through the Manager Server. Meta DNS Pro includes a license for one Manager Server. You can deploy the BIND-based DNS servers anywhere that has connectivity to a Meta DNS Pro Manager Server. A DNS service can support both slave and master zones. Meta DNS Pro supports all zone types: master, slave, stub, hint, and forward. Meta DNS Pro includes licenses for 4 DNS servers. Each server supports unlimited zones. You can purchase licenses for up to 2 additional DNS servers. Meta DNS Pro includes the tools to find, analyze, and manage the data in a small business's name space or an external name space. Initialization Wizard The Initialization Wizard runs automatically when you first configure Meta DNS Pro. It configures the initial forward and reverse zones and creates resource records for the primary DNS service machine. You can also configure common network services (your mail server, web server, and FTP server). Zone Templates Meta DNS Pro offers the Zone Template Tool, which allows you to specify DNS options and create default resource records common to all zones, or several templates that each apply to a subset of your zones. When you create a new zone, Meta DNS Pro offers to create the zone based on your templates. Templates can save time and prevent mistakes when typing repetitive information. Check Service Configuration You can check the configuration of any DNS service by using the Check Service Configuration tool. Double-click on any item's summary to receive a detailed analysis. Configuration Analysis tools provide reports that you can run on your DNS services and zones to troubleshoot problems and examine configuration and usage. Meta DNS Pro provides each tool as a configurable template that you can save and use again at a specific time, a specific date, or a specific interval. You can display an analysis on the screen, to a table, or to a file that you can further customize. Analysis Tools includes three DNS report templates. The Meta DNS Pro Dynamic view displays current DNS activity. You can search any or all zones for records, obtain properties, and delete a record or a range of records. |
