The Meta IP Architecture

You can deploy Meta IP in three-tiers, which consist of:

  • Tier 1: the Management Console (the UI)
  • Tier 2: the Manager Server (the datastore)
  • Tier 3: the DNS and DHCP services

The Management Console requires a Windows platform, but the other Manager Server and the DNS and DHCP services can run on Windows, Linux, or Solaris platforms (including the MetaInfo Appliance).

The Meta IP Management Console (the UI)

You configure and administer all Meta IP Services through the Meta IP Management Console. Meta IP includes an unlimited number of Management Consoles installations to ensure worldwide connectivity to the Manager Servers. The Management Console must connect to a Meta IP Manager Server: direct communication to DNS and DHCP servers (Tier 3) is not possible.

The Meta IP Manager Server

Meta IP includes a license for 2 Manager Servers to permit datastore replication. Datastore replication provides a hot backup of your data at set intervals. Replicated Manager Servers can be configured anywhere in the world with network connectivity.

MetaInfo licenses bundles of IP addresses with the Manager Server. IP address licenses range from bundles of 1,000-200,000 addresses. Additional IP address licenses are available in increments of 1000.

The DNS Servers

You can deploy the BIND-based DNS services anywhere in the world that has connectivity to a Meta IP Manager Server. A DNS service can support both slave and master zones. Meta IP Enterprise supports all zone types: master, slave, stub, hint, and forward. Meta IP Enterprise includes TSIG to secure DNS transactions (between DNS servers or between DNS and DHCP servers). Additionally, you can create Custom ACLs that you can apply to all services or to a particular service.

The DHCP Servers

Meta IP fully automates administration of DHCP services (including all failover services) from the Meta IP Management Console. You can create, modify, delete, export or find any DHCP service or object.

Meta IP DHCP includes many-to-one failover: you can devote a single machine as a secondary (failover) server to multiple DHCP servers. You are not restricted in how you deploy the DHCP servers, however.

SAFE DHCP

SAFE DHCP extends the functionality of the Meta IP DHCP engine to evaluate clients before granting a lease. SAFE DHCP requires no changes to the DHCP client software and complies with all DHCP protocol standards. SAFE DHCP includes the MAC Address Authentication Module and can be used stand-alone or as part of the SAFE DHCP Quarantine Framework.
